The Value of a Good Print | Maternity & Baby Photographer - Berlin, Ocean City, MD MD

A picture is a picture right?  Or is it.  This blog post will touch on the benefits of having your photographs printed through a professional photographer and print lab rather than printing them out yourself or ordering through big box chain stores.

Which would look better on your walls?  The cd you paid a lot of money for from your photographer or a lovely canvas print of your favorite image from your session?  Part of my pricing strategy is to get more customers to think like this.  Everyone wants the digital images but the question to ask yourself is what do you want them for?  Me, personally, I like digital images.  I am an avid scrapbooker and these images will be printed and cut up and collaged in my books and showed off for years to come.  I can't bring myself to cut up my good quality professional print lab prints so I don't mind cutting up cheapy prints and being that they are in the scrapbook and part of the appeal is the book itself and not just the image, I am ok with the lessor quality for this.  However, when it comes to prints on display, on my walls, in frames, as gifts, this is a different matter.  I like giving high quality prints to show off the best of my kids and of my images.  I am not going to get the same print from a local drug store or consumer print lab that I would get by going through my professional companies.  The printers they use are built for commercial print jobs and meet my expectations of quality and color.  Being that I am a scrapbooker and probably print about 1,000 photos per year for my books, I have been through several printing companies and each one has disappointed me for one reason or another.  Color from one set of prints that looks nice can be totally orange or washed out on the next set causing me to again journey on my everlasting quest for the perfect reasonably priced consumer printing company.  There are things that I like and dislike about each of the ones I have used.

The following shows some examples of prints I ordered from my pro lab, printing myself and picked up from a couple of local stores.

My professional print lab is a spectacular print.  There is little glare.  The quality can clearly be felt and seen when held in person to the comparison prints.  All of my prints 8x10 and larger are printed with a layer of matboard to protect against dings and creases.  There is a light texture to protect against fingerprints.  The photo I printed myself was the closest comp but was a tad saturated.  The Walmart print was contrasty and showed a bit of pixelation (not sure if that is a real word, but you get what I mean), as seen in this photo below.  The Walgreens print was green tinged and looked, "dirty" to me.  The Walgreens print was very glossy and showed fingerprints and creases worse than the others.  The Walmart and Walgreens prints had an off balance crop as I was unable to choose my own crop.

Another example.  Note the blacks came out grey/greenish on the Walgreens print.  Also, around the baby was an unattractive "blue halo", especially around the hair.  This was a true black and white print, one of my favorite newborn photos taken to date.

The risks of printing on your own:

Color casts.  This is my biggest problem with printing companies.  There is nothing I dispise more than orange photos.  I once picked up a batch from a local printing company that I uploaded through online and they were completely orange.  I was horrified.  They were so bad I didn't use a single one of them in my scrapbooks.  Another local lab I have frequented when I need something in hurry tends to fade out all of my colors to drab greys and greens.  People look grey and dismal in the photos, very pale.  It is quite disappointing.

Crops.  Have you ever ordered a print that looked great on your computer and then when you picked it up the head was cut off?  This is because the image was not sized before you sent it to the printer.  Photos are taken with a certain ratio/size.  My photos are generally a hair off of a 4x6 size if I don't crop or do anything special to them.  Sometimes I add canvas space to them or crop a certain way to get a look I am going for but generally I know when ordering that if I am not ordering a comparable size ratio, I will need to do a little work.  When you order your prints through your photographer, hopefully this is me, I resize the photos for the crop that I want to ensure you aren't getting a photo with a head cut off.  Sometimes to do this, I add to a photo to make the size work or I might suggest a different size if we are doing this for a canvas.  By ordering your own photos, you are jeopardizing what kind of crop you will get and your print chain will certainly not add size to your photo to make the size work without losing any of the "good stuff".  Can you imagine going into a store and ordering a canvas only to pick it up and find that part of your child's face was lost on the wrap around the edges?  Or that the crop didn't work for the size you wanted?  Now you are out the money for the canvas and have to choose a different size and order another.  I am aware of sizing and how the wrap will fall when I order and I adjust accordingly.  Here is an example of different size ratios and how the same image would work with different sizes.  For canvas, I would need about 2 extra inches on each side for the same effect.

Timing.  Most of my professional prints come within a couple of business days.  Sometimes if they are ordered with a canvas or collage, I will hold them until the order is complete and deliver at once.  I have waited as much as two weeks for prints for scrapbooking before, and I also have paid large shipping fees to get my prints.  I do not charge fees for shipping if orders are picked up.

So who do I recommend.  I recommend mpix for printing personal photos.  THIS IS NOT A PROFESSIONAL QUALITY PRODUCT.  I want to stress that I don't use mpix for business but I will use them for my personal photos for scrapbooking and sharing with family and friends.  They do have a quality product and the prices are comparable to box store prices.  They are the closest I have found for quality products at a consumer (non-professional quality) price.

The benefit to purchasing digital images from your photographer is for the archival advantage.  Having the photos available to print again later.  I only hold images about 60 days from expiration of galleries.  This is to keep my computer running good, I need to clear these files often.  Purchasing the digital images ensures you can get more later through me or your printer of choice.  Just this weekend I was doing a homework project for school for my son and pulled a flash drive out with photos I wanted to use.  That was convenient to print them out from home and do his project within and hour and without spending a lot on photos I will never see again.  Budget-wise, I would say to splurge on the canvas or photos you will look at all the time, these are the images you will treasure and share.  We have a wall of canvas photos in our living room that gets many many compliments by guests and friends.  Compliments I would have never received with them sitting on a flash drive in a desk drawer.  If I had to choose between the canvas or digitals, I would have stayed with the canvas.

Holiday Mini-Sessions Announced! | Professional Family Photographer - Berlin, MD

What is a mini-session?  A mini-sesson is exactly what it sounds like.  A typical session is about an hour long and a mini-session is a shortened session limited to the length of time specified.  In this case, I will be offering 20 minute mini-sessions for the purpose of holiday photos for cards and gifts.

Mini-Sessions are a way to purchase goods at a discount over regular pricing or smaller packages.  With mini-sessions I have less images to go through, process and edit and in turn can offer them at a discount over full session pricing.  Mini-sessions typically use the same backdrops for the same season and require less of me to haul and move items around, also contributing to their lower cost.  The benefit to the customer is getting the photos at a discount.  The disadvantage is not having the amount of time needed to do an a full-session if you are looking for larger variety in your images and more to choose from.

Studio mini-sessions will be offered from October 1 through December 1.  After December 1st, holiday photos may still be requested but at the full session pricing and there will be no guarantees for delivery dates on orders.  I decided not to limit the studio minis to one set day or time this year.

I will be offering beach mini-sessions on Saturday October 6 only.  This will be the only day that I will offer beach minis.  Full sessions can still be done but if you are interested in the mini-session pricing, this will be the only day to book for that.  I have an Assateague Photographers pass so these mini-sessions will be done at a determined location on Assateague Island.  If you are interested in Beach photos outside of October 6, they will be offered on full session pricing only.

The high resolution photos included in the joy collection do come with a print release.  You will be able to have the photos printed at your printer of choice.

There are two discount opportunities with the mini-sessions.  For every friend you refer who purchases a mini-session, each of you will receive a free 5x7.  There is no limit to this.  If five of your friends sign up and say you sent them, you will receive 5 free 5x7s.

The second discount opportunity will be a free gift with your session for sharing the flyer on your facebook page and tagging my facebook fan page in the status.

Please book ahead to ensure availability!

Customer Appreciation Day at Trimpers | Professional Family Photographer - Ocean City, MD

We spent the afternoon at Trimpers Rides in Ocean City, MD for Customer Appreciation Day!  We had a great time.  The kids loved the rides and I was able to catch a few sweet pics of my son on the Carousel.  The photo on the bottom is a great example of why I don't do afternoon photo sessions as it can present some pretty harsh (and unflattering) shadows on the face but sure does flatter the Ferris Wheel nicely!  I loved this angle and the only thing I would have changed was made my kids wait to get on until there were more people in the seats to fill them up :)  THANK YOU TRIMPERS RIDES for hosting this great customer appreciation day!

Happy Birthday "Little {K}" | Professional Child Photographer - Berlin, Ocean City, Salisbury, MD

This sweet little girl shares a birthday close to my son's, they are just a couple of weeks apart.  Love watching them grow and seeing how close they are in size.  This session was quite some fun.  Two year olds are not the easiest to get in front of the camera and settle but she was a hammy and once the cupcake entered the room, all bets were off :)

Brayden turns 2! | Professional Child Photographer - Berlin, Ocean City, Salisbury, MD

I can't believe this little guy, my little guy, just turned the big two!!!  For those that have not met my family, Brayden has PFFD in his left leg.  His left femur is a few inches shorter than his right.  He wears a lift shoe for balance and an AFO brace to stablize his ankle and keep it from rolling when he walks and runs.  We have put together a team, "Footprints for Brayden" (also the name of his blog if you google it), and will be walking proudly in the save-a-limb walk/ride this fall to benefit the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

The cupcake photos are hilarious.  He is the first child I have taken photos of to actually lick the floor when he dropped the cake.  I love this boy!  These photos show a lot of his character and how happy-go-lucky of a kid he really is!

What is a Composite? | Professional Baby Photographer - Berlin, Ocean City, Salisbury, MD

Composite photos are the process of taking 2 or more photos and merging them together, this is something that takes time and practice to accomplish.  Some of my newborn photos I post are actually composites.   The first thing I go over with clients when they arrive is newborn safety.  We go over basics and when it is time for composite poses, mom or dad will assist.  I also stress that if at anytime mom or dad is uncomfortable with a pose, we will stop and move on to the next.  I give 2-3 hours for newborn sessions; however, much of that time is spent on mom and dad feeding and caring for baby.  The sessions are usually close to an 1.5-1 3/4 for newborn and then depending on whether mom and dad want photos with the baby or sibling shots, that usually makes up the difference in time.

Babies have weak neck muscles and they are not strong enough to hold up the weight of their own head at this age.  The photo below shows how I am able to accomplish a sitting up photo without baby ever holding their own head up.  Some babies will naturally hold this pose and you might feel like they are strong enough but it isn't good for them and I would rather be safe than sorry and have someone spot them.

The next photo is an interesting photo and not one that I would normally jump to do.  Parents were leaving that afternoon and wanted a beach photo.  Thankfully it was overcast and being that I have an Assateague Photographers permit, we went to Assateague to take this photo.  As you can see from the composite, mom was with baby the whole time and for me to achieve a look showing much of the face, I head swapped from another photo.  I prefer the more studio, comfortable, snuggly photos to this but I think this was a nice change of pace and fun to try.

A trend I have seen online is the hanging poses, with baby "falling out" on a hammock or snoozing.  This can be done without baby ever leaving the ground or whatever the photographer is using to pose on.  If a photographer hangs your baby with space between baby and whatever they are working with, it is ok to ask them not to.  This could be a risky situation for your baby.

Pets...I have been asked about pets a couple of times (usually dogs).  I like dogs, I recently became a dog owner myself.  My first issue with laying your baby on your dog for me to take the photo is that if something were to go wrong, it would be my insurance and my business reputation on the line.   I use studio lighting and maybe a dog who has always been docile may become frightened of the pops of flash or react negatively.  My suggestion to this which I am happy to try is posing baby and dog with mom and dad.  I like these sort of family photos using dogs when done safely.  It could possibly be done as a composite if planned and researched ahead of time but again, mom and dad would be on dog and with baby at all times.  My second concern with this is the unpredictable behavior around my studio equipment.

One last trend I want to touch on is glass vases, jars, candy dishes, etc.  There are a lot of great blogs written with examples using a doll to show what can happen if the glass breaks so I don't need to show that but as a parent, if it looks like a bad idea, it probably is.  It is ok to tell your photographer no if an alarm goes off in your head and you are uncomfortable with something.  No matter how colorful and cute your baby may look stuffed in a jar of gumballs, if it is not done without the baby ever being in the glass, I wouldn't let them do it.

Why post this?  Sure some of these are tips that help make my photos what they are and it might take a pinch of the "magic" out of them.  There is a growing problem with people seeing newborn photos and wanting to imitate them and not knowing that they are composites and potentially putting babies in danger.  Whether it be new photographers or parents foregoing paying for a photographer.  It has taken me a full year to find what I really like in doing my newborn photos, what works for me and what doesn't.  Most of what I see from others' styles just isn't my style and what is great about there being a wealth of photographers looking for business right now is that there is something for everyone and at every budget.  It has taken me an entire year to find what colors and equipment I like to use and what I can live without.  How I like to set up and what order I find works for me.  What I am sure of though is doing newborn photography.  The workout that comes from a two hour session, the hard work that goes into the session before and long after the session itself is done, the amount of laundry!?!, the clean up and sterilizing, as much more work than it is than any other kind, I haven't found another type of session that gives that feeling of beauty and accomplishment upon finish to date.

Please book your newborn photos with me in advance.  To ensure availability, I like to set a tentative date about two months ahead of delivery.  The past couple of months I have been filling up and wouldn't have been able to fit any last minute sessions, don't miss out, book early!

Surfer Girl - Baby {S} - 13 Days | Baby Photographer - Ocean City, Berlin, Salisbury, MD

Who says boys are tougher than girls?  This little chicky is ready for the big wave at just 13 days old.  She was a perfect little sleeper and even gave me one of those elusive "baby smiles" as seen in one of the photos above.  So precious and the most beautiful apple cheeks on this one, mom and dad sure have a future heartbreaker on their hands!

Loving Newborn and Maternity | Professional Pregnancy & Baby Photographer MD

These are just a few of the reasons I love doing maternity and newborn photos.  The expectant mother's excitement and the purity of a new baby.  I love taking clean images a little on the darker side.  I have spent this past year finding my niche, what I like, (what I don't) and what my style is and I have found maternity and newborn to definitely be my favorite.

Newborn photography is not for the camera enthusiast.  What I have learned is it takes a lot of patience, knowledge, education, skill, proper equipment, photoshop knowledge and most of all maternal instinct.

I have been a legitimate business for over a year now.  While I don't regret starting, I think if I had known how much work, time and money would be involved with starting out, I might have waited another year or two to start.  No one really understands the amount of work, research, investment and sacrifice goes into being a custom photographer until they actually go into business and try it.  I have read that the majority of photography business do not make it to their 5th anniversary, I would like to be in this for the long haul.  While it is a lot of work, and sometimes more than I can handle, I thoroughly enjoy getting to take part in intimate moments of people's lives, taking photos to stand a moment still.  As an avid scrapbooker for 10 years now, I can appreciate the importance of photographs and what they mean to a family.  They become part of a family's history, their heritage.  I am blessed to be given the gift I have to take the photos that I do.  It takes much more than a great camera to take a nice photograph :)
